Want to make your garden a whimsical place to unwind come the evenings or weekends? We think a roll (or two) of outdoor hanging lights will do the job!

If you like the idea but feel like hanging lights won’t work as well in your back garden, you could opt for garden path torches or lanterns for soft lighting.

Lockdown restrictions have broken many routines, changed up school schedules and even interfered with how you’ve been able to be the best you, you can be… Well, seeing as Lockdown measures are lessening, we want to inspire you on how to lead the happiest and healthiest life possible.

Whether you’ve slacked on the home workouts or haven’t been making the best choices when it comes to food (because takeaways seem to lessen the pain of being stuck indoors), we’re here to motivate you in making positive decisions for you and your family.

Get Your Cook On!

Make an evening of it! Whether it’s with your children or friends, why not create a fresh 3-course dinner? Your taste buds will be winning, and you’ll be feeling no guilt as you indulge into (moderately) healthy and homemade dishes.

Let’s give you an idea of what we mean…

Starter:
– Tomato & Cucumber Salad dressed with a little olive oil and dried mint.
– Baked tortilla chips with homemade guacamole.
– Classic prawn cocktail with a homemade thousand island sauce and sliced iceberg lettuce.

Mains:
– Ratatouille with a homemade red sauce. Be sure to top it with fresh basil, YUM!
– Lemon and herb chicken with a fresh mixed pepper salad.
– Lean turkey burger in lettuce wraps with sweet potato wedges.

Desserts:

Aiming for 10k A day!

We know, it sounds like a tall order but in hindsight, a trip mooching around the centre will probably use up 2-3k of your daily goal (including a few stop-offs at Bistro Café Plaza or Costa Coffee for your fave coffee and sweet treat). Even if you’ve got your Fitbit or Apple watch on while you’re at home, it’ll count the steps you complete when taking the fresh washing upstairs, picking up dinner ingredients and just walking around while you do a little spring cleaning…

If 10k sounds a little steep, aim for 5-7k – we know you’ll smash it. We’d also recommend a morning or evening walk to enjoy with friends or family members. It’s a great way to get some cardio in while enjoying the company of your nearest and dearest.

If you’re in need of new walking/running gear, we’d recommend heading to Peacocks, New Look or Dilly Dally if you fancy a sleek new co-ord. Creating Fun Food for Kids

It’s easier for us adults to eat healthier, because we can make conscious decisions on what we’re putting into our body. But kids being kids, sweets and easily attainable processed foods are always a winner! Want to make a healthier change as we head into mid 2021? Well, we’ve got a few top tips on how to make healthy food a little more appealing…

• Give them a choice! No one likes being told what to eat, so when possible give them an option between lettuce-wrapped fajitas or sausage and root vegetable mash for example.
• Make fun faces with their food. Whether silly faces with fruit or smiley faces with cucumber finger sandwiches and baked crisps.
• Don’t reference food as ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ in front of your children. Instead of focusing too much on why certain foods are “healthy” or “unhealthy,” just try to serve healthy food options with each meal and lead by example.
• Don’t ban junk food! When you ban something outright it will only seem more attractive to a child, so if you’re out somewhere and they want a chocolate bar or bag of crisps, don’t make a big deal out of it. We’re all allowed a little treat from time to time.
• Let them help with cooking! Getting involved in meal prepping, chopping up veggies and dressing the plate are all ways to get them excited about eating fresh, homemade food.

Yes!! We finally have a little light at the end of the Lockdown tunnel, and we’re now on a countdown for slight normality come April 12^th, 2021. If you’re dreaming of summer BBQs with your best friends, music festivals, normal sized weddings (and more!) – you are not alone!

Although, we must remember to stay careful when we’re out and about, lockdown restrictions lifted or not. So, when you’re next visiting the centre, remember to wear your facemask over your mouth and nose and keep a safe distance from others where possible.

Back to School (again!)

As of March 8^th, many children were lacing up their school shoes and sharpening their pencils ready for their first day at school, for the umpteenth time since last year…

We just want to applaud all the parents out there that have survived the last couple of months. We understand that home-schooling is super difficult and trying to spice-up day-to-day activities to keep your littluns’ from going stir crazy is even harder!

So, WELL DONE YOU, YOU DID IT.

Need any extra school essentials? We’d recommend grabbing pens, pencils and more from Sainsbury’s and WHSmith – not to mention cool school lunch boxes, notepads, and even clothes!

Outdoor Meetups

From the 29^th of March (fingers crossed) the current ‘stay at home’ rule will come to an end and individuals will be allowed to meet outside for fresh air and spring strolls to enjoy with one other household or within the ‘rule of six’. Don’t forget, you will also be able to meet in private gardens – meaning it’ll be Pimm’s O’clock with little nibbles for the foreseeable.

FYI: It will be recommended to stay in your local area. Be sure to get ahead of the game and order a new picnic blanket from Argos, grab pre-made drinks from Sainsbury’s and fun snacks from Holland & Barrett for all to enjoy nearer the time.

Let the Fun Times Roll…

As 12^th April peeps its head around the corner, we’ll be able to wine and dine outdoors at our favourite restaurants and drink a tipple (or three) in pretty pub gardens. Sounds like a dream, wouldn’t you agree?

As we see the re-opening of gyms and spas too, you can knock DIY spa days from the comfort of your home on the head and take a trip to a local hotel or resort where they can pamper yourself to your hearts content. #YAY

Don’t forget hairdressers will be re-opening their doors so we can get the fuzzy mops on our heads sorted before summer 21 begins! Make sure to head to beauty salons too, they’ll be able to book you in for that mani-pedi or eyebrow wax. We know Lashious Beauty will be able to help in this department once they re-open.

But the most fun part that we’ll be looking forward to (especially those with children…) is… Theme parks, zoos and drive-in cinemas will be at our disposal. The excitement of your local park has probably worn off, so now there’s an abundance of options you can choose from come the weekends!

Follow the ‘Restriction Lifted’ Road!

As ‘stages 3’ (from 17^th May) and ‘stages 4’ (from 21^st June) come into action we can look forward to SO much more – and it’s about time!

Performances and large events that are similar will be subject to limits, but those lucky few will be able to enjoy mini festivals. Dependant on venue capacity, some will allow up to 4000 people and some even up to 10,000. However, we know there’ll be those that don’t feel comfortable about getting back up on the horse just yet. So, if you want to enjoy events like these but with only close friends or family members, you can create your very own back garden Glastonbury. Music, pretend burrito vendors and homemade cocktails – there’s an option for everyone wink wink. Need inspirational bits to get the party started? Grab all sorts like glow sticks, banners, glitter paint and party props from One Below, Superdrug and Boots at the centre.

Obviously, we won’t forget that hotels, international leisure and travel will begin to resume too. We’ll finally be able to spend our hard-earned money on weekends away and short trips to the countryside… And before we know it, we’ll be bumping in nightclubs, dancing together at large weddings and celebrating every life occasion to the fullest! Half term is almost here, and we know parents everywhere are probably thinking ‘how are we going to keep the children occupied while there’s no homework or lessons?’. Well, Lockdown, our old friend has restricted us slightly, but despite everything, it’s made us think more creatively with ways we can have fun and spend time with loved ones.

Let’s go on a Scavenger Hunt!

Get a few of the kids’ favourite treats lined up (could be choccy coins or wrapped sweets) and create a hunt in the home, or even your garden or local park/forest if the weather permits!

To make things extra fun, you could offer a small prize to the winner, add in a few challenges or riddles to get their imagination flowing too.

A few tips to become a hiding master:

• Hide under plant pots
• Cover with leaves
• Riddles to get them from one part of the house to the other – for a little inspiration, you could use the below:

I am hiding here and there
Near the tree or under your toy bear
Up and down you must look
Whether under the sofa or between toys & books.

Now that you’ve found a few
We’ll give you one last clue – look under daddy’s shoe!
Once you find the final one
You can raise your hands and scream ‘I WON!’

Quarantine Time Capsule

A bit of an understatement, but we are truly living through history right now! In years to come, when COVID-19 is discussed the way the plague is mentioned in history books, you might want a unique way to remember the smaller details of living through it all… You could have your child find items around the house that are unique to lockdown habits you’ve formed as a family and put them into a time capsule – whether it’s a book, journal or kitchen towel that you’ve overbaked banana bread with. Then set a date, 5, 10 or 15 years down the line, when you can re-open it together and reminisce.

You could bury it in the garden or even keep it in the loft – it’s totally up to you!

Keep it Crafty!

Arts and crafts can never go a miss – it’s probably the messiest pass-time possible, but the children will love engaging their creative ideas through drawing, glitter sprinkling and even painting (if you allow it!).

You could get them to draw their best friends playing in the park or a new family portrait that you can hang proudly on the fridge!

Ready to Romance!

We get it, Lockdown has taken away evening dinners out at your favourite restaurants, spa weekends and so much more. But just because we can’t go out to our ‘top spots’, doesn’t mean you can’t have a romantic night in, don’t you agree?

We’ve got a few ideas and we just want to inspire you:

• Make dinner together, you’ll love deciding which sauce to pop in your pasta and choosing a dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.
• Once dinner is done, put on a film you watched when you first got together & reminisce about all the good times from then, to now!
• Want to go the extra mile? Run a bath and light a few scented candles, this way they can finish the evening feeling totally relaxed (and in love with you!). However, if your partner in crime isn’t really a bubble bath kind of girl or guy, you could opt for chocolate covered strawberries instead – we think that’s just as exceptional!

Self-Help: How to Unwind

You can’t let the pandemic get you down, so we need to make time for SELF-LOVE. We’ve got a few tips & tricks on how to unwind while you’re at home alone, with flat mates or family.

Mani Pedi Time! Pop to Boots, Superdrug or Savers and pick-up new nail polishes to get creative with. We’d HIGHLY recommend a cheeky facemask here or conditional hair mask there… Why not go all out and treat yourself to an evening of TLC? Men can also get involved by trialling out charcoal facemasks and new beard oils or cleansing moisturisers!

Meditation & Yoga: Find your ‘zen’ by meditating in the morning or before bed. We’ve heard that meditation (and yoga) has been a significant way to reduce stress… We’d suggest that if you’re new to the yoga scene, to pop YouTube on and start with a beginner’s class & build up your stretching strength. If you’re in need of a Yoga matt, be sure to click & collect it from Argos when you’re next at the centre picking up the essentials. (You could even grab a new yoga book from The Works once the store re-opens.)

Engaging with Others: It’s so significant that we talk to friends & family during these hard times. Even reaching out to those we may not know well, but who seem to be struggling just to see how they are could make an impactful difference to one’s life. Many people find that opening up about their struggles have helped them tremendously – so taking a couple minutes out of your day to ask or chat can make the world of difference.

So, be sure to check in on the ones you love from time to time. FYI, you could do this over the phone, text, social media, video calls or sending letters.

We think we’ve given you plenty of ideas when it comes to health, happiness and self-help during 2021 and beyond. And even though some shops are currently closed, be sure to make the most of your time at home, because once we’re summoned to work, there’s no going back! Despite the pandemic keeping us indoors up until mid-February, let’s make it as good as we can and see the positives when it comes to having more free time (again) with the people you love the most! We still have a great feeling about 2021 and look forward to some fun times ahead!

This Style article will provide inspiration from ‘how to keep the kiddies entertained’, ‘making homework time fun’, to weekend activities that will help you unwind from ‘Parent mode’ to ‘Pina Colada Monday Fundays’… wink wink

5,4,3,2, FUN!

Wondering how to keep the kiddies entertained now that home schooling has started, and their clubs are cancelled? Maths, Football, literacy, and gymnastics – you name it, you’ll have to do it from home! So, why not create a fun space to learn in addition to their very own club where they can still have that ‘release’ from a long day of working at home with mum or dad.

Home Schooling ROCKS: Wondering how you’re going to get through the day? Well, the trick is routine! Be sure to have your breakfast together and prep your children for the day ahead. Maths in the morning, small snack breaks, lunch, and free time in the afternoon to revise or for ‘quiet time’ like reading or writing a creative story… Plus, use ALL the resources that the school are willing to give you. Whether it’s as simple as a colouring sheet, mock test papers to increase their skills or online sites that they can work through daily.

Making it fun doesn’t have to be a chore either, the more they realise they can learn ANYWHERE, the more they’re going to want to, especially if you’re giving them praise along the way. If you’ve noticed that they’ve scored high on a spelling quiz or similar, you can treat them to something small. Maybe a favourite takeaway or small ‘prize’ when you pop out for the essentials? We think they’ll love it.

Football Club: Set up a goal outside (or indoors if you’re brave enough) and get a soft ball that they can kick about and practice their goals. You could cheer them on from the side or even play 1-on-1 to test their skills! Need snacks and carton juice boxes to keep the energy levels up? Pick up what you need from Sainsburys.

Prima Ballerinas: Wherever there’s room, get their ballet shoes on and start to perfect their plié. Set them a goal where they come up with a 10-step routine that they can perform to the family before dinner time. *In case ballet blisters occur, prepare with plasters from Boots or Superdrug on your next visit to the centre.

Stretch it Out: Get flexible with your kids and do a stretching routine before they show off some of their gymnastic moves! Be sure to lay out pillows so they don’t bump or bruise themselves on any hard surfaces. You could even click & collect new & helpful equipment from Argos too.

Get Arty: Get the paints, glitter, and coloured paper at the ready! Your children can get creative & paint a modern family portrait. Be sure to pick up bits & bobs from The Works or WHSmith* at the centre. *WHSmith is currently open for the essentials.

Get your Groove On: Let them have some fun with what you can find in the house. We’re talking, making music with pots & pans, or dusting off the family recorder… Obviously, this isn’t for the faint hearted, but they could come up with their own January jingle and play it back to you & the family. You could also grab dinner from Sainsbury’s to enjoy after the big show… YUM!

Indoor Camp-Out: This will have everyone super excited – sleeping bags, yummy snacks, and movies galore. If, as a family you fancy grabbing a few new treats to try, be sure to grab something sweet (or savoury) from Bistro Café, Café Creme & Costa Coffee at the centre.

Parenting Mode: Off

A spa day for you and your partner sounds nice, right? (Or it could be just for you). Grab essentials like facemasks, bubble bath, bath bombs and more from shops like Savers and even Holland & Barrett.

Unfortunately, not all our stores are open right now, but if you’re waiting for the centre to re-open fully, you could write a list of everything you’ll need for your ‘at home spa day’ and grab it with ease after Lockdown 3.0 is lifted.

Need more inspiration? We got you! For those 18+, pick a day most suitable and enjoy a cocktail making experience at home. You could easily grab ingredients & probably even a new mixer from Sainsbury’s… Plus, if you feel like getting extra fancy, you could pick up new homeware from there too.

We have a popular #January cocktail at your service: (Yes, we know – we’ve thought of everything)

Fresh fruit cocktails don’t have to retreat during winter. Liven up your go-to Negroni with tangy grapefruit segments and grapefruit peel swirled inside the glass.

You’ll need:

• Long, wide slice of grapefruit peel
• 2 peeled ruby red grapefruit segments (or 1-ounce fresh ruby red grapefruit juice)
• 1 1/2 ounces gin
• 1-ounce sweet vermouth
• 1/2-ounce Campari

This tipple will switch ‘parent mode’ off and ‘fun time while the kids are tucked away in bed’ swiftly on! You can thank us later.

Enjoying Time as a Family: January Edition

Been a long week of family meals, zoom meetings and helping with your child’s homework? Enjoy some down time as a family and bring the ‘mad hatter’s’ tea party to your home. Make the dining table or kitchen space whimsical by creating a scrummy tea party where you can all wear wacky hats and crazy clothes! This can all be finished up with your favourite finger sandwiches, tea, cool glasses of milk and mini cupcakes. Does this not sound like the perfect way to enjoy January 2021? It does to us.

While preparing the final touches, let the kids have some fun and help you lay the fruit on the table and get the paper cups at the ready – we know they’ll love feeling involved. Whether its new tableware, paper plates, food and any extra bits – be sure to pick up the essentials you may need from Sainsbury’s and Holland & Barrett. You could even get dressed up as a family – theme could be: Cosy Jumpers for the WIN! You could grab something from Peacocks, Select Fashion, New Look (even cute accessories from Claire’s) once the centre fully re-opens.

Before you even start cleaning, there are some steps you can follow to help you through the process:

1. Draw up a schedule and break up your cleaning into easy to manage portions – by breaking it up over several days you won’t tire yourself out and the process can become more enjoyable.
2. Tackle your cleaning one room at a time – by tackling one room at a time you can give it all your attention, for example, in your bedroom you can take the time to organise your closet and get rid of things you don’t wear or need.
3. Get everything you need before you start cleaning to avoid having to stop.
4. Create multiple piles of items as you go through your house, one for storage, one for charity and a rubbish pile for the things you want to throw out.

BE MASTERFUL WITH YOUR MUCK

The kitchen and bathroom are probably the worst places to clean as the steam from cooking and hot showers can make the dirt and grime more difficult to remove. There are plenty of tricks and clever products that will make this arduous task a lot easier.

• Lemon cleans stainless steel – Simply halve a lemon and use it to scrub away those annoying streaks and marks.
• Steam clean your microwave – Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar and a few drops of a scented essential oil of your choice with water and place this in the microwave on a high temperature for five minutes. Not only will it remove those tough stains and food build up, it will smell great too.
• Organise your refrigerator – Place a lazy Susan in your fridge for bottles, jars and containers, to make it easier to get to the items that you want, and keep your fridge organised. Plastic containers are also a great way to keep your food fresh, and make it easy to see what you have in stock.

BRIGHT AND BLISSFUL BATHROOMS

Steam marks and water stains can be laborious to clean, and with so many products required for daily grooming, your bathroom is bound to look untidy unless you create clever storage solutions. Look out for storage products to ensure everything is kept neat, while being easily accessible.

• Get rid of water stains and product build up – Tumble Dryer sheets are great for removing product build up on glass shower doors.
• Keep your bathroom smelling fresh – Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil inside your toilet paper roll for a constant, pleasant smell.
• Deep clean your shower head – Regularly fill a sandwich bag with baking soda and vinegar and tie this around your shower head. Let this soak overnight to loosen dirt and grime and use an old toothbrush to scrub it clean.
