For what seemed like years in lockdown, the dust has finally settled and we’re back to normality (kind of!). The centre is open and there’s a lot more to look forward to as the month of May continues. Whether it’s eating IN your favourite restaurants again, the re-opening of cinemas or other leisure activities and spaces to keep your kiddies occupied come the weekend or half-terms! Come on, who’s excited?!

You’ll be super excited, movie buffs… Cinemas will be re-opening come May 17^th and it will be popcorn, hot dogs and ice-cream cones galore. We think it’s a super idea if you come to pick up all your favourite snacks and enjoy chowing down with the kids (or your friends) at your local cinema. Be sure to pop into Sainsbury’s or OneBelow to grab a few naughty treats. Or you could pick up slightly healthier options like yoghurt coated cranberries from Holland and Barrett.

Get Ready for Fun!

This one’s more for the children, but parents you’ll also be pleased to know that as May rolls on, leisure activities like soft play and indoor fun spaces will be opening their doors for kids everywhere to enjoy space running around and just letting loose. (All being as safe as possible of course!).

Many places will require you to book in advance, so don’t forget to do so before rocking up as a walk-in. Booking systems are great, because businesses will be able to limit the amount of people coming in and therefore keeping everyone safe in the process. Don’t forget to grab a hand sanitiser bottle from Superdrug for your trip out. #HandsFaceSpace

Time to Eat…

Now, this must be the best news of May all together! Although we’ve been able to dine Al Fresco for the last few weeks, from 17^th May, we’ll FINALLY be allowed to eat IN our favourite restaurants. Not only this, but after a long day shopping at The Pavilions, there’s nothing better than popping into somewhere for yummy food, right? To be honest we’ve been craving creamy pasts dishes from an authentic Italian and warming stews from the local pub!

And yes… you’re right! This means you’ll finally be able to make a coffee pitstop at Café Crème, Costa Coffee and Bistro Café while you’re shopping at the centre. We know, we’ve missed having a 10-minute shopping break with a tasty tea or freshly brewed cup of joe… #May17Pending

Lockdown restrictions have broken many routines, changed up school schedules and even interfered with how you’ve been able to be the best you, you can be… Well, seeing as Lockdown measures are lessening, we want to inspire you on how to lead the happiest and healthiest life possible.

Whether you’ve slacked on the home workouts or haven’t been making the best choices when it comes to food (because takeaways seem to lessen the pain of being stuck indoors), we’re here to motivate you in making positive decisions for you and your family.

Get Your Cook On!

Make an evening of it! Whether it’s with your children or friends, why not create a fresh 3-course dinner? Your taste buds will be winning, and you’ll be feeling no guilt as you indulge into (moderately) healthy and homemade dishes.

Let’s give you an idea of what we mean…

Starter:
– Tomato & Cucumber Salad dressed with a little olive oil and dried mint.
– Baked tortilla chips with homemade guacamole.
– Classic prawn cocktail with a homemade thousand island sauce and sliced iceberg lettuce.

Mains:
– Ratatouille with a homemade red sauce. Be sure to top it with fresh basil, YUM!
– Lemon and herb chicken with a fresh mixed pepper salad.
– Lean turkey burger in lettuce wraps with sweet potato wedges.

Desserts:
– Sorbets to share.
– Fruity salad with a drizzle of single cream.
– (A little naughtier, but fun for the kids!) Cheat churros made with puff pastry! Remember, children especially are more likely to eat healthy foods if the presentation is appetising and if they have a hand in making some of the dishes, they’ll feel super proud that they created something so delicious.

We’re talking new cookware (if you’re in need) from Argos, ingredients from Sainsbury’s (or even Holland and Barrett), finished with new tableware from One Below and Sainsbury’s again.

Aiming for 10k A day!

We know, it sounds like a tall order but in hindsight, a trip mooching around the centre will probably use up 2-3k of your daily goal (including a few stop-offs at Bistro Café Plaza or Costa Coffee for your fave coffee and sweet treat). Even if you’ve got your Fitbit or Apple watch on while you’re at home, it’ll count the steps you complete when taking the fresh washing upstairs, picking up dinner ingredients and just walking around while you do a little spring cleaning…

If 10k sounds a little steep, aim for 5-7k – we know you’ll smash it. We’d also recommend a morning or evening walk to enjoy with friends or family members. It’s a great way to get some cardio in while enjoying the company of your nearest and dearest.

If you’re in need of new walking/running gear, we’d recommend heading to Peacocks, New Look or Dilly Dally if you fancy a sleek new co-ord. Plus, if you feel like investing in a watch that’ll count your steps throughout the AM and PM, head to Gadget Store and check out their selection. Creating Fun Food for Kids

It’s easier for us adults to eat healthier, because we can make conscious decisions on what we’re putting into our body. But kids being kids, sweets and easily attainable processed foods are always a winner! Want to make a healthier change as we head into mid 2021? Well, we’ve got a few top tips on how to make healthy food a little more appealing…

• Give them a choice! No one likes being told what to eat, so when possible give them an option between lettuce-wrapped fajitas or sausage and root vegetable mash for example.
• Make fun faces with their food. Whether silly faces with fruit or smiley faces with cucumber finger sandwiches and baked crisps.
• Don’t reference food as ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ in front of your children. Instead of focusing too much on why certain foods are “healthy” or “unhealthy,” just try to serve healthy food options with each meal and lead by example.
• Don’t ban junk food! When you ban something outright it will only seem more attractive to a child, so if you’re out somewhere and they want a chocolate bar or bag of crisps, don’t make a big deal out of it. We’re all allowed a little treat from time to time.
• Let them help with cooking! Getting involved in meal prepping, chopping up veggies and dressing the plate are all ways to get them excited about eating fresh, homemade food.

Yes!! We finally have a little light at the end of the Lockdown tunnel, and we’re now on a countdown for slight normality come April 12^th, 2021. If you’re dreaming of summer BBQs with your best friends, music festivals, normal sized weddings (and more!) – you are not alone!

Although, we must remember to stay careful when we’re out and about, lockdown restrictions lifted or not. So, when you’re next visiting the centre, remember to wear your facemask over your mouth and nose and keep a safe distance from others where possible.

Back to School (again!)

As of March 8^th, many children were lacing up their school shoes and sharpening their pencils ready for their first day at school, for the umpteenth time since last year…

We just want to applaud all the parents out there that have survived the last couple of months. We understand that home-schooling is super difficult and trying to spice-up day-to-day activities to keep your littluns’ from going stir crazy is even harder!

So, WELL DONE YOU, YOU DID IT.

Need any extra school essentials? We’d recommend grabbing pens, pencils and more from Sainsbury’s and WHSmith – not to mention cool school lunch boxes, notepads, and even clothes!

Outdoor Meetups

From the 29^th of March (fingers crossed) the current ‘stay at home’ rule will come to an end and individuals will be allowed to meet outside for fresh air and spring strolls to enjoy with one other household or within the ‘rule of six’. Don’t forget, you will also be able to meet in private gardens – meaning it’ll be Pimm’s O’clock with little nibbles for the foreseeable.

FYI: It will be recommended to stay in your local area. Be sure to get ahead of the game and order a new picnic blanket from Argos, grab pre-made drinks from Sainsbury’s and fun snacks from Holland & Barrett for all to enjoy nearer the time.

Let the Fun Times Roll…

As 12^th April peeps its head around the corner, we’ll be able to wine and dine outdoors at our favourite restaurants and drink a tipple (or three) in pretty pub gardens. Sounds like a dream, wouldn’t you agree?

As we see the re-opening of gyms and spas too, you can knock DIY spa days from the comfort of your home on the head and take a trip to a local hotel or resort where they can pamper yourself to your hearts content. #YAY

Don’t forget hairdressers will be re-opening their doors so we can get the fuzzy mops on our heads sorted before summer 21 begins! Make sure to head to beauty salons too, they’ll be able to book you in for that mani-pedi or eyebrow wax. We know Lashious Beauty will be able to help in this department once they re-open.

But the most fun part that we’ll be looking forward to (especially those with children…) is… Theme parks, zoos and drive-in cinemas will be at our disposal. The excitement of your local park has probably worn off, so now there’s an abundance of options you can choose from come the weekends!

Follow the ‘Restriction Lifted’ Road!

As ‘stages 3’ (from 17^th May) and ‘stages 4’ (from 21^st June) come into action we can look forward to SO much more – and it’s about time!

Performances and large events that are similar will be subject to limits, but those lucky few will be able to enjoy mini festivals. Dependant on venue capacity, some will allow up to 4000 people and some even up to 10,000. However, we know there’ll be those that don’t feel comfortable about getting back up on the horse just yet. So, if you want to enjoy events like these but with only close friends or family members, you can create your very own back garden Glastonbury. Music, pretend burrito vendors and homemade cocktails – there’s an option for everyone wink wink. Need inspirational bits to get the party started? Grab all sorts like glow sticks, banners, glitter paint and party props from One Below, Superdrug and Boots at the centre.

Obviously, we won’t forget that hotels, international leisure and travel will begin to resume too. We’ll finally be able to spend our hard-earned money on weekends away and short trips to the countryside… And before we know it, we’ll be bumping in nightclubs, dancing together at large weddings and celebrating every life occasion to the fullest! Ready to Romance!

We get it, Lockdown has taken away evening dinners out at your favourite restaurants, spa weekends and so much more. But just because we can’t go out to our ‘top spots’, doesn’t mean you can’t have a romantic night in, don’t you agree?

We’ve got a few ideas and we just want to inspire you:

• Make dinner together, you’ll love deciding which sauce to pop in your pasta and choosing a dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.
• Once dinner is done, put on a film you watched when you first got together & reminisce about all the good times from then, to now!
• Want to go the extra mile? Run a bath and light a few scented candles, this way they can finish the evening feeling totally relaxed (and in love with you!). However, if your partner in crime isn’t really a bubble bath kind of girl or guy, you could opt for chocolate covered strawberries instead – we think that’s just as exceptional!

We’d recommend a visit to Superdrug, Boots or grabbing a click & collect from Argos when you’re next at the centre picking up your essentials. You could get a sweet or sentimental gift for the one you love, be it spa pamper gifts, a new book, mugs or even something gadget-y!

Making each other’s favourite brunch dishes is truly the way to someone’s heart (well, it is for us anyway!)…

You could spice things up a little bit and play with your favourite bottle of wine and nibbles – YUM! If this sounds appealing to you but you don’t have board games lying around the house, be sure to make a speedy click & collect from Argos before the special day!

5,4,3,2, FUN!

Wondering how to keep the kiddies entertained now that home schooling has started, and their clubs are cancelled? Maths, Football, literacy, and gymnastics – you name it, you’ll have to do it from home! So, why not create a fun space to learn in addition to their very own club where they can still have that ‘release’ from a long day of working at home with mum or dad.

Home Schooling ROCKS: Wondering how you’re going to get through the day? Well, the trick is routine! Be sure to have your breakfast together and prep your children for the day ahead. Maths in the morning, small snack breaks, lunch, and free time in the afternoon to revise or for ‘quiet time’ like reading or writing a creative story… Plus, use ALL the resources that the school are willing to give you. Whether it’s as simple as a colouring sheet, mock test papers to increase their skills or online sites that they can work through daily.

Making it fun doesn’t have to be a chore either, the more they realise they can learn ANYWHERE, the more they’re going to want to, especially if you’re giving them praise along the way. If you’ve noticed that they’ve scored high on a spelling quiz or similar, you can treat them to something small. Maybe a favourite takeaway or small ‘prize’ when you pop out for the essentials? We think they’ll love it.

Football Club: Set up a goal outside (or indoors if you’re brave enough) and get a soft ball that they can kick about and practice their goals. You could cheer them on from the side or even play 1-on-1 to test their skills! Need snacks and carton juice boxes to keep the energy levels up? Pick up what you need from Sainsburys.

Prima Ballerinas: Wherever there’s room, get their ballet shoes on and start to perfect their plié. Set them a goal where they come up with a 10-step routine that they can perform to the family before dinner time. *In case ballet blisters occur, prepare with plasters from Boots or Superdrug on your next visit to the centre.

Stretch it Out: Get flexible with your kids and do a stretching routine before they show off some of their gymnastic moves! Be sure to lay out pillows so they don’t bump or bruise themselves on any hard surfaces. You could even click & collect new & helpful equipment from Argos too.

Get Arty: Get the paints, glitter, and coloured paper at the ready! Your children can get creative & paint a modern family portrait. Be sure to pick up bits & bobs from The Works or WHSmith* at the centre. *WHSmith is currently open for the essentials.

Get your Groove On: Let them have some fun with what you can find in the house. We’re talking, making music with pots & pans, or dusting off the family recorder… Obviously, this isn’t for the faint hearted, but they could come up with their own January jingle and play it back to you & the family. You could also grab dinner from Sainsbury’s to enjoy after the big show… YUM!

Indoor Camp-Out: This will have everyone super excited – sleeping bags, yummy snacks, and movies galore. If, as a family you fancy grabbing a few new treats to try, be sure to grab something sweet (or savoury) from Bistro Café, Café Creme & Costa Coffee at the centre.

Parenting Mode: Off

A spa day for you and your partner sounds nice, right? (Or it could be just for you). Grab essentials like facemasks, bubble bath, bath bombs and more from shops like Savers and even Holland & Barrett.

Unfortunately, not all our stores are open right now, but if you’re waiting for the centre to re-open fully, you could write a list of everything you’ll need for your ‘at home spa day’ and grab it with ease after Lockdown 3.0 is lifted.

Need more inspiration? We got you! For those 18+, pick a day most suitable and enjoy a cocktail making experience at home. You could easily grab ingredients & probably even a new mixer from Sainsbury’s… Plus, if you feel like getting extra fancy, you could pick up new homeware from there too.

Fresh fruit cocktails don’t have to retreat during winter. Liven up your go-to Negroni with tangy grapefruit segments and grapefruit peel swirled inside the glass.

You’ll need:

• Long, wide slice of grapefruit peel
• 2 peeled ruby red grapefruit segments (or 1-ounce fresh ruby red grapefruit juice)
• 1 1/2 ounces gin
• 1-ounce sweet vermouth
• 1/2-ounce Campari

This tipple will switch ‘parent mode’ off and ‘fun time while the kids are tucked away in bed’ swiftly on! You can thank us later.

Enjoying Time as a Family: January Edition

Been a long week of family meals, zoom meetings and helping with your child’s homework? Enjoy some down time as a family and bring the ‘mad hatter’s’ tea party to your home. Companies such as Iceland, Aldi and Tesco are producing their own, and even winning awards for it. This Iceland Luxury Chocolate Eggs in Honeycomb & Caramel is a snip at £4 and endorsed by the Good Housekeeping Institute, Aldi’s Exquisite Easter Egg shimmers gold and is only £7.99 and Tesco Finest* Belgian Dark Chocolate and Butterscotch Egg is a mouthwatering £7.00.

FREE FROM?

Don’t miss out on scoffing an Easter egg due to dietary restraints. Whether you’re looking for an egg free from dairy, wheat, gluten or sugar, you will find it. What’s more it will not only look as good as a traditional chocolate Easter egg it will taste as good too. It’s not just health food shops like Holland & Barrett that are providing this range, most major supermarkets are also jumping on the free from bandwagon, offering alternative options as part of the full Easter egg ranges. Holland & Barrett have a No Added Sugar Easter Egg at £3.99, whilst Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury have selected own brand ‘free from’ eggs priced from £2.50 as well as stocking brands such as Choices and Moo.

Make use of the multibuy offers in supermarkets and stock up on chocolate Easter eggs for the whole family. Just make sure you don’t scoff the lot yourself!

Asda has branded Easter eggs in 3 for £10 deal. The offer includes favourites by Cadburys’ and Thorntons, and novelty offerings such as giant Kinder Eggs, Peppa Pig and DC Comics eggs.

Tesco has a range of Easter egg deals including two for £6 on selected branded eggs, which features Nestle’s popular Kit Kat and Aero ones alongside Cadbury’s classic Creme Egg and Mini Eggs. There is also 2 for £10 on large Easter eggs and 3 for £10 deals on medium size eggs.

You can currently get two for £5.00 on large Easter eggs at Iceland. This deal includes a wide range of popular brands from Quality Street to Galaxy and Celebrations.
